Gone Fishing!

Cap`n Dan

When we left the dock to fish the Cedar Keys it looked a little stormy. As we approached Atsena Otie the sky was becoming dark with rain clouds. I thought we`d pull up into one of the little coves to wait out the storm. As soon as I got the bimini top up it started to pour down on us. Stiff breeze and torrential rain. We huddled under that top for 20 minutes waiting for the storm to blow over; then we would move to a favorite fishin` spot of mine.

I had a crew of 4 very dedicated fisher folks on board. They fished out from under the top while it was raining hard all around. We fished all incoming that day; Sunday Aug. 1, the 2nd full moon in a 30 day period. A `blue moon`. I don't care what color they call it, it`s the fact that it was full. A lot of good high water rising up and around the keys, filling them up and covering the oyster bars and sand bars too. Allows me to get up close and over the shallows. Excellent habitat for Redfish. Oysters and grass and sand. They come up into l` to 2` of water to get a meal of some little critter swimmin` around there. And just out past the bars in the grass and sand the Trout are hunting around for a small fish for dinner. And all the other species local to the area as well.

We caught Redfish, 4 of em`, with two keepers of 18" or more. We put 4 keeper Trout in the cooler out of 8 catches. And rounded out a real Florida seafood buffet with 2 Spanish Mackeral of 18" and 19". Within our 4 hour trip we also caught 2 huge Stingray for added excitement. All in all, another wonderful fishin` trip in around the Cedar Keys. With the varied unspoiled vegetation and sea life around the keys, the fishing is some of the best in Florida. Ya'll go fishing and enjoy some of the last of the `real Florida`
