Incmbents Roll Over Opposition

Incumbents Thelma McCain, Heath Davis and Sue Colson were reelected by overwhelming majorities in Cedar Key's election May 3. Thelma McCain was reelected to her seat on the Water and Sewer District Board with seventy-seven percent of the votes. Commissioner Heath Davis remains on the City Commission, having received sixty-six percent of the votes. Commissioner Sue Colson was reelected to the Commission with fifty-eight percent of the votes. Pat O'Neal, in his first run for office in Cedar Key, won a seat on the Commission with sixty-eight percent of the votes.

The most closely contested race was for Seat 5 on the Commission. Sue Colson was challenged by businesswoman Glenda Richburg. However, Colson prevailed with a plurality of sixteen percent, 255 votes versus Richburg's 184. Richburg appeared to be mentored by George Sandora, a frequent visitor to Cedar Key. Sandora was also active in support of Pat O'Neal's opponent, Skip Drake, who drew 138 votes versus O'Neal's 297.

Cedar Key voters turned out well, with about three out of four registered voters casting ballots. The votes were tallied with the speed and assurance of a battery of CPA's. Two absentee ballots were disallowed and one was damaged beyond use. Tally of the absentee ballots followed counting of the ballots cast in person. The absentee boallots only increased the leads of all race winners.
