Bulkhead Debate Goes On

Jim Hoy

On a split vote the Cedar Key Commission approved construction of a bulkhead on the Whiddon Street Canal, but again tabled action on a bulkhead for a G Street property.

Gene Malinowski, speaking for his son who is in Iraq, requested construction of a bulkhead and dock for use by Hog Island Clam Co. The plans were recommended for approval by City Building Official Walt Brown. Commissioner Sue Colson objected to the bulkhead, saying that mangrove plants could prevent the erosion that the bulkhead is intended to impede. The Commission approved the bulkhead and dock on a four to one vote after hearing two witnesses speak in favor of the project.

There is ongoing confusion about a partially constructed bulkhead on a property owned by Brett Vincent. The Vincent bulkhead was constructed before approval was granted, and the exact and proper location of the bulkhead is in dispute. Two Final Orders for construction have been drafted. The Commission directed City Attorney David Coffey to clarify which of the two orders is currently under consideration. The matter was tabled until the January 9, 2007 meeting. Mayor/commissioner Paul Oliver said that the City will require "undoing the current pilings" to meet the City's requirements.
