SUMMER ART PROGRAM
EXHIBITS TREASURES
2024 July 20
The Cedar Key Arts Center was abuzz with happy children and teens, appreciative moms, dads, ad grandparents, and delighted community supporters. The students’ exhibit of their art projects were beautifully displayed on the second floor galleries on Friday, July 20, from 10:30 to 11:30 am. Some twenty elementary and tee-aged students took part.
“Exploring Art” was the summer theme and, indeed, the youngsters did explore art. The two-week experience for elementary students included a wealth of experiences. Eah day began with journaling; each student created his/her own paper journal. They tie-dyed tee-shirts, they made prints, they made origami folds, they water colored, and they produced puppet creatures. The puppets fully functioned, with alligator jaws chomping and ducks quacking.
Each elementary student displayed his/her artwork separately. Each produced a cardboard print of his/her name for placement above the display. His/her dyed tee-shirt was placed below that, followed by the smaller pieces of art completed this summer.
The teens’ artwork was equally impressive. They created sculptures and wall hangings from driftwood and crating materials. The recurring comment from the tens present was they never believed that they could produce the sculptures that they did. They expressed delight with their experience.
Resident Wynne Simpson remarked, “What a wonderful experience this is…everyone should see the sparkle in their eyes.” This is a “celebration of kids!” said another resident. Summer art instructor Rothfarb said of the students, “amazing, wonderful!”
Primarily responsible for the Children and Teen Summer Art Program for the past decade are Polk County art teacher and Cedar Key summer resident Jessie Rothfarb and Cedar Key’s energetic, can-do, will do person Patty Jett.
