NEW CKPOTTERY 2019
CEDAR KEY ARTS CENTER ELEMENTARY SUMMER ART PROGRAM AND TEEN ART PROGRAM
2024 July 29

ELEMENTARY ACTIVITIES
The theme for this year’s elementary Summer Art Program was: Think, Explore, Create. Under the guidance of art teacher Jessie Rothbard , the theme was pursued. Sonya Rine and Raleigh Hudock were the assistants. Volunteers Dawn Callahan, Kris Bittner, and Patty Jett provided extra help.

Each day started with writing in their journal ideas on what to create.
Each child made an artistic rendition of their name using bubble letters and creativity involving paint pens and/or pastels.

The students explored many different ways to print.
• Relief plates were made by cutting out cardboard and glueing the shapes to other cardboard then applying ink with a brayer and printing on paper
• Foam plates were etched with pencils, covered in ink and printed.
• Prints were made from painting plants and other objects and printing them,
• Liquid water color was added to shaving cream and swirled with a pencil, paper was laid gently on top and the color transfer.
• Monotype prints were made using a gel plate. The plate was painted, objects were layered on top, paper laid on top resulting in a one of a kind print.

Clay sculptures were constructed, T-Shirts were tie dyed, 3-D paper sculptures were made, rocks were painted, drawings were produced, and paintings were created. All this took place starting on July 8, ending on July 18 and displayed on July 19.

TTEN ACTIVITIES
The teens, under the direction of Bunny Hand, made their own sketchbooks. Paper was folded and lined up then using an awl, holes were punched in the binding area, covers were added then it was all hand sewn together. Covers were decorated and sketches were made.

Messenger bags were sewn to carry the sketchbooks. Deb Bloomberg Mann had the students construct a fused class pieces of art. Some students used the colorful glass pieces on the black background piece to create faces, flowers, a boat on a dark sea, and a moth.
Pam Deas had the students spend time making charcoal still life drawings. Pam also gave basic instruction on how to paint a pastel portrait. Students then did a pastel portrait from a live model.
Sonya Rine did a day of up-cycled art. The teens could use a wooden pallet, pieces of wood stripped of bark and wired brushed or any other object as their base. Paint, wire, beads, shells, lights and other materials were used to create a variety of work.

Jessie Rothbard had the teens construct a unique tic tac toe board with themed playing pieces from clay. She also showed them how to do Japanese Kumihimo braiding using a circular form which were turned into bracelet.
Both Programs had an Exhibit on July 19, 2024 from 10:30 - 11:30 which was well attended.
