Levy County and Cedar Key commissioners met in a joint workshop on Tuesday, August 4, at 10 am in Bronson. The evet was designed to update all on Levy County-owned properties of common interest. All ten commissioners attended. All commissioners contributed their thoughts to the amicable discussions that occurred.
DOCK STREET PIER
The Dock Street Pier continues to be a complicated property. Damaged by Hurricane Helene, the dock “repair project is underway” but no funding source as been identified. The following staggering numbers were reported: completed inspection of pier $15,697.09; estimated engineering costs $165,000; estimated repairs $1,100,000.
Cedar Key commissioners declined the Levy County commission’s off er to take the pier off its property rolls.
GEORGE T. LEWIS AIRPORT
Levy County staffers reported possible plans to extend both end-of-runway aprons into the marsh to facilitate removal of planes that accidently land or coast into the water. Staffers also are considering lighting and additional avionics systems for the area. Again, no funding source was mentioned.
Levy County commissioners did not offer the property to the City of Cedar Key. Mayor Wortham requested that the city be considered should the county wish to sell or offer it.
SHELL MOUD DREDGING PROJECT
Shell Mound was impacted by Hurricane Helene also. A Forida Boat Improvement grant for $896,460.00, through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is funding the dredging project now underway. The project should conclude in October.
