2021
September 8, 2021

SEPT 8 OBIT PIC helenpictHelen L. Brown, age 91, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2021, at the Eternal Hope Hospice in Griffin, Ga. Helen was born in Cedar Key Florida, to the late Bill Hathcox and Hattie Hurst Hathcox. She attended and graduated from Cedar Key High School. Helen had a dream of opening her own restaurant in Cedar Key. She made that dream come true in 1971 when she opened The Captain’s Table Restaurant, located on the Big Dock. Helen’s desire to serve fresh Florida, authentic prepared seafood, made The Captain’s Table Restaurant known across the United States. She considered her employees her extended family; she respected and loved each and every one of them.

Helen was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Cedar Key, Fl.  She is preceded in death by her late husband A. Ray Brown. She is survived by: her daughter, Deborah Booth Mitchell, Hampton, Ga.; granddaughter, Darla Elizabeth Booth-Rains, Hampton, Ga.; brother Thomas Hathcox of Pique, Mississippi; and John Hathcox (Amalene) Crystal River, Fl.; four nieces and three nephews; her favorite cousin, John W. Tucker (Burney) of Statesboro Ga.

Helen’s life was her restaurant and her favorite hobbies, her flowers and greenhouse. She loved fishing with Ray on the Air Boat and was a no-nonsense fisherwoman. She had a talent for sewing and making quilts. But all these came second when her only grandchild was born, Sugar Plum. She became the delight of her life.

After selling The Captain’s Table and the death of her husband, she relocated to Jonesboro, Ga. to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter. She returned often to Cedar Key to visit family and friends.

To honor her wishes, a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of Flowers, we ask that you make a donation to Eternal Hope Hospice in Griffin, Ga. or to the Christ Episcopal Church in Cedar Key, Fla.
