A CASE FOR THE CEDAR KEY US POST OFFICE
Another storm, another flooded post office and limited if no service. An inside source with the Post Office said, “it will have to be moved.” “Where to?”
The reply, “Otter Creek? No facilities/too far. Chiefland has everything but too far. Rebuilding in the same spot is not an answer.”
The solution: Move the Post Office to a HUD house next door to the current Cedar Key town hall. There would have to be modifications, loading dock, parking, counters, etc. It would take the mayor and the city council to do their jobs and request this move by contacting state and federal elected and government officials. Not their job? Wrong, this is exactly why they were voted in to represent us. All they have to do is ask and present their case.
Benefits: The house is transferred from one government agency to another. This house is currently unoccupied, so no one gets displaced. It is on some of the highest ground in Cedar Key. Best part since the structure already exists, it could open relatively soon and in the next storm, the post office will be open the next day.
