A TREASURE LOST
2-24 December
For those of you who did not know Chick Schwartz, you missed a unique treasure.
Chick was one of the brightest persons we’ve ever met. From his knowledge, understanding, care, and concern for people to his polymathic grasp of politics, science, literature, and art, Chick was exceptional. Chick regularly undertook care of those less able than he, taking them on picnics and other junkets. A voracious reader, Chick could talk about anything and those who talked with him always came away with more thoughtful, balanced, nuanced views.
Chick’s care of people and his brilliance were always accompanied by his wonderful sense of humor and his full-face, warm, open d smile. His sign on State Road 24 on Kiss Me-Quick juxtaposed Fresh Fish / Fine Art, the “Fresh Fish” referring to Mo Beckham’s nearby sales. He talked about having a baby in one arm and a how-to-do-it book in the other while settling into the new family reform in Canada.
The treasure of Chick is not totally lost to Cedar Key. Our house is adorned with magnificent sculptures of dancing girl’s and sunbathers; the Island Hotel has framed street scenes filled with balloons and engaging characters; the Cedar Key Arts Center sports the angler in its garden fronting Second Street, just to name a few.
Chick Schwartz will never be lost to us.
