Between the Storms

Between the Storms

Capt. Dan Shannon

The weather eased up a little and I was able to go inshore fishing Sept. 1 thru 4. Four days in a row. WOW! It was a real pleasure to get out after staying onshore because of rains and windy conditions.

When we did motor out and around the Cedar Key area we were able to catch speckled trout and silver trout on the East side of Chris Knox. That`s a shallow spot out beyond Snake Key aprx. 2 miles. It`s marked with 3- 2" PVC pipes sticking up above the waterline. They are close together, less than a foot apart. Sometimes a cormorant is perched on top of one of the pipes.

Nice spotty bottom all around there. Grass and sand. The trout are in there feeding on the small bait fish hiding in the grass. We caught Jack Crevalle, (Yellowtail Jack), and Ladyfish too. A lot of action and a lot of fun. We boated our share of sharks also.

Today is Monday September 10th and it looks like a great day to be out on the pontoon boat floating over some good fish habitat and filling up the cooler with fresh fish. Too bad I have chores onshore. The 11th thru the 14th are forecast to be windy. 15 to 25 mph. That`s too choppy to fish correctly and the fish don`t cooperate real good in those conditions.

Maybe towards the weekend we`ll get a `window of weather` and go track down a few redfish around the oyster bars. September and October, when the water cools down a little, have always produced a lot of redfish in the Cedar Key area.

We`re still in the hurricane season so I expect the weather to be rough most of the time. Occasionally we get a few days of good weather and get out and catch some fresh fish. If you want to make some great memories and tell a few good fish stories, call me at 352-221-5463 and I`ll find a day with good weather and we`ll do it. check out the pics at my website, http://www.inshorefloridafishing.com
thanks, Capt. Dan
