Fall Redfish Season

Fall Redfish Season

Capt. Dan Shannon

Redfish finally made their way back into the Cedar Key area. I`ve been ready since the end of August, but haven`t caught many until this mid September. I had 2 trips Sept. 13 and 14 and I can officially state that reds are all over the oyster bars that surround the mangrove islands of Cedar Key.

The 1st trip was 6 folks from central Florida and I had been asked if I had a `push button` Zebco reel for 1 of the men because he didn`t like to fish and wasn`t familiar with a spinning reel. We stopped at Seahorse Key and I got everyone fishing and the gentleman, Joel, who didn`t have any experience fishing, caught the 1st redfish. A 17 incher so we had to release it.

I demonstrated , again, how to cast his Zebco and I turned around to help my other guests, and he was battling another redfish. Everybody caught reds that trip at 3 diffeent spots. Joel ended up with 3 redfish. Ralph caught the biggest 1 at 26.75in. He`s the man in the picture.

The next day I had 5 folks from the Istachata area. Yeah, that`s really a town. Just north of Brooksville, Fl. We went to the same spots and this time it was a lady who had the `hot-rod`. Linda was reelin` and crankin` her rod all day. That`s Linda in the other pic with 1 of her many fish. There was plenty of action the entire trip.

We had a birthday boy onboard last Sat. the 16th . Gene was celebrating his 72nd, and don`t you know, he caught the biggest red. He`s wearing the hat in the pic with his 23in. red.

Folks, they are biting real good now-a-days and should continue right thru mid-November. The water temperature has cooled a little and it`s just gonna get better. I`ve had fresh redfish for dinner 2 nights in a row. If the wind isn`t blowing too hard it`s a treat to catch your own and I`ll fillet `em all so you can have some fresh fish too.

Call me at 352-221-5463 and schedule a day to make some great memories.
