What Comfort Zone

What Comfort Zone

Jackie Jurcik

There are few finer things in life than good conversation and a great meal. Before my move to Florida, I could count on one hand the memorable, cherished meals I have had in my adult life. Since Cedar Key happened, I`m happy to say that the number has increased considerably. I have never been one to go outside my group of friends to invite to dinner-or even to accept an acquaintance`s dinner invite. A little known fact about me: I`m an introvert. I`m just always seeking out ways to push out the walls of my comfort zone. As uncomfortable as this makes me, it does make life more interesting and generally paves the way for greater opportunities.

Awkward social situations give me anxiety just thinking about them. If you suffer from this as well, might I suggest moving to a small island town where you know absolutely no one? Kind of cured a bit of my social anxiety! Another less life-altering way is to say, "Yes!" to that dinner invite. From doing just that, I have met such interesting people from all walks of life that I would have otherwise never socialized with. But I think we can all agree that Cedar Key has that unique, magical way about it where anyone can have the opportunity to connect with a wide variety of folks and in return, have some fantastic stories to tell for life.

The pure beauty and charm of this place completely sucked me in and it is always interesting to hear how others came to find themselves here. For the first couple months I was here-after the customary social pleasantries, of course-I would often be asked, "What`s your story?" At dinner parties, these sorts of questions are amplified and expected to have more elaborate answers. However, the beauty of the situation is that you are not the only one in the crosshairs-everyone is! Now, throw in some agreeable background music, a tasty meal, the beautiful islands as a backdrop, and BAM! You have set yourself up for a fantastic evening full of unexpected events and wonderful conversation that you will never forget. And that my friends, is the beauty of the Cedar Keys!
