Speckled Trout Spectacle

Speckled Trout Spectacle

Capt. Dan Shannon

It`s November 16 and were catching trout all over the Cedar Key, Fl. area folks and it hasn`t let up yet. Speckled trout are swarming all over the shallow grass `flats`. Anchor up or drift over a grassy area and expect a lot of action.

You don`t need a depth finder or a GPS. You can see the grass down 4 to 5 feet and thats where they are. Trout are down there hunting smaller bait fish to eat. We`ve been tossing shrimp out on a floating leader aproximately 3ft. long. The floats don`t stay floatin` very long. Often you will get a strike as soon as the rig hits the water.

Everybody likes to fish with light winds and clear skies. I don`t blame them. But sometimes you go out in some breezy conditions and cloudy skies. It hasn`t mattered to the trout this fall season. Last Wednesday the 14th I met 4 men at 9am for a trip, and it was so windy and clouded over with a tide so low as to restrict our access so I suggested we wait an hour before we left the dock. They agreed and at 10am we started out to North Key to look for the wiley trout fish. For the 1st half of our 4 hour trip we couldn`t catch a cold. I was mystified. We caught 2 sharks and a catfish out past North Key just outside of the channel. I said to myself, "they couldn`t have left the area already, the water temp is 67 degrees F", still warm to a trout.

We spent the last 2 hours in 1 spot west of Seahorse Key. I didn`t have to move again. One and two at a time came over the side with the dipnet. The big fat speckled trout were really hungry. I released many undersized trout but at the end of our trip we had 12 good fish in the cooler. Theres` is a picture with our catch before I filleted them all and slipped them into ziplock bags with ice. Theres 1 plump bluefish also. The next pic is of Dick with a 19in. trout.

Folks, it doesn`t have to be perfect conditions to have a great time and take home some fresh fish for dinner. Let me share a good time and make some memories with you. Call me at 352-221-5463 and we`ll get out there. I`ll keep an eye on the weather. Go to:

and check it out. thanks, Capt. Dan
