Cedar Key Lions Roland Senecal and Susan Hollandsworth present the Ronald McDonald House of Gainesville with 196,182 aluminum can drink tabs in 30 one-gallon jars, weighing 126 lbs. The can tabs culminate a four-year collection drive spearheaded by Lion Senecal.

The tabs have a pure, high recycle value aluminum content compared to the recycled aluminum that is used in the cans. The Ronald McDonald House recycles the donated tabs, with the income used for house expenses to assist families with critically ill children while they are guests at the Ronald McDonald House of Gainesville.

The Ronald McDonald House of Gainesville, affiliated with the University of Florida Shands Hospital, has 40 guest rooms for children and families to live in while the children are undergoing medical procedures at the hospital.

They also operate the Ronald McDonald Family Room, adjacent to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Shands Hospital. The Family Room serves the needs of local and out-of-town families who cannot leave the hospital due to the fragile condition of their child. The Family Room is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing snacks, a small kitchen, television, a computer and a private sleeping room.

For more information on the Ronald McDonald House of Gainesville, see www.rmhcncf.org

The Cedar Key Lions meet at 6:30 pm every second and fourth Tuesday of the month at the Cedar Key Community Center.
