March show at the Arts Center

March show at the Arts Center

By Amy Gernhardt

The 3-D show at the Cedar Key Arts Center portrays many interpretations of material and subject matter. The artists both local and from a distance, range from large ceramic form, with basket interweave on the surface by David McDonald, to large wave like forms by Henry Gernhardt. The two collaborated extensively when they taught Art at Syracuse University.
First place went to Antonio (Tony) Silviera, named Bird in Hand, which was an owl`s head, with sea urchin "feathers" sprouting out in all directions, the mosaic "hand" visually lifting the owl, reflected in the mirror on the stand. The work took "about a year" to complete, according to Valerie Bretl.

The local artists who submitted work range from wood, in the work by Lois Bennighoff, who took a piece of driftwood to form a figure, which fluidity of form suggests movement in time and space. Lois took second place in the show.

Third Place went to a replica, also in wood, of a street scene familiar to all who remember the L&M, its clientele, its moody music, the late nights when Cedar Key featured nationally known bands. The work is an assemblage by Mike Leiner.

The opening was a huge success, with hors d`oeuvres from Peter Stefani of the Island Room.
A special thank you to Donna Thalacker and Joyce DeHaan, and Nita Cox for hostessing the event.
The show will be up until March 31. It is well worth another look.

In the MAG; we are featuring Marty Haythorn, who will also have a workshop demonstrating earthenware stamping, and a pit fire this week. Please stop by the Arts Center Tuesday, March 5 at 1 pm for a demonstration.
