CEDAR KEY HOSTS HEALTH FAIR

CEDAR KEY HOSTS HEALTH FAIR

By Mandy Offerle, Cedar Key

Nearly thirty vendors converged at the Cedar Key Community Center on Friday, March 1, 2013, all with a common, meaningful purpose: to make Cedar Key area residents a healthier lot. They came armed with stethoscopes, bone density meters, anti-smoking pamphlets, audiometers, and more. This energetic assembly of professionals engaged visitors tirelessly from 9:30AM to 1PM, informing, discussing, sometimes charming and cajoling, residents into increased knowledge and, hopefully, better health.

Organized and coordinated by Palms Medical Group`s Vice-President of Development and Research Eileen Senecal and generously supported and promoted by the Cedar Key Lions Club, the Health Fair offered visitors not only significant health information but also delicious, healthy food and drink, including home-made bran muffins, tea, and orange juice, to mention but a few items in the broad array of food choices. Enjoying the gathering were many Lions Club members performing myriad tasks from cooking, serving, and greeting, to post-fair cleaning. Cedar Keyan resident and photographer Rory Brennan`s pictures, attached here, capture many of these individuals in action at the fair.

The Ocala Lions Club Vision and Hearing van personnel screened residents; the Suwannee River Area Health Education Center screened for bone density; the Levy County Department of Public Safety provided oxygen level tests; the Palms Medical Group screened for diabetes with blood glucose tests; LabCorp provided blood tests. Among the other vendors were: Heartland, American Automobile Association, Nature Coast Rehabilitation, Elder Operations, Meridian, SHINE, Chiefland Senior Center, Haven Hospice, Gentiva, Veterans Administration Support, Nurse-on-Call, TC Medical Supply, United Healthcare, and Levy County Transit.

Personnel from Florida Telecommunications Relay, Inc., a statewide non-profit organization, assessed hearing and distributed free telephones to numerous hearing impaired individuals at the fair. This program is funded by an 11-cent tax levied on every Florida landline.
