Obituary

Herbert Harlan Holman, PhD Mathematics, 82, died on 13 April 2013 at the Haven Hospice in Chiefland, Florida after a brief illness.

He leaves his wife of 6 years, Wilma Colburn Holman; 3 sons Leland of Coconut Creek, Florida; Bradley of Laurel, Maryland, and Gary of Seminole, Florida. Grandchildren Kimberly Holman Whitfield, Joseph Michael Gaidurgis, Jonathan Holman, Kelley Anne Holman, Ryan Loyd Gaidurgis, Jason Holman, Lindsey Holman Thayer, Amanda Holman, Bradley T. Holman Jr, Claire Holman, Sean Holman, Andrew Holman, Matthew Holman, and Emma Holman, and eleven great grand-children. His wife of 43 Years Imogene M. Holman passed away in 2000.

Born and raised in Cedar Key, Herbie would help his father fishing, and his mother in running the family store that was located next to their home at the corner of Park St. and FL-24 in Cedar Key. A Member of Boy Scout Troop 103, he became the first Eagle Scout in Levy County. After graduation from The Cedar Key School, Herb attended the University of Florida, where besides fishing for trout on the weekends to help make ends meet, he graduated with a Bachelor`s and a Master`s degree. He also joined the Air Force ROTC and eventually earned the rank of Captain in the Air Force reserve.

He left the area when his employment with the Federal Government took him to the Washington D.C area where he got married and raised his family. During that time he went on to earn his PhD in Mathematics from the Catholic University in Washington D.C. He was a charter member of the Senior Cryptologic Executive Service and the Phoenix Society, and retired in 1993 after nearly 40 years of faithful service. He also taught mathematics part time at Prince Georges Community College in Largo MD and the University of Maryland. Herb returned to Cedar Key in 2003.
Services will be held at the Cedar Key Baptist Church on Monday 15 April 2013 at 11:00am, with a visitation at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Haven Hospice in Chiefland, FL or The Cedar Key Baptist Church.
