Cedar Keys Light Station to Open This Weekend

Cedar Keys Light Station to Open This Weekend

Submitted by Pam Darty, Refuge Ranger

Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge will host the free Seahorse Key Open House event this Saturday, July 6th from 10:00 to 4:00. The event celebrates the fledging of the nearly 15 species of young birds born on the rookery island this spring. Access to island and its beaches has been restricted since March 1st of this year, as it is annually, to protect against any interruption to the breeding and nesting activities of the rookery.

The historic Cedar Key Light Station will be open for viewing and great photo opportunities. Driftwood on the beach is a great setting for family photos. The University of Florida will host touch tanks offering up marine creatures for the curious. In addition, there will be a spotting scope for viewing the downy-feathered pelican nestlings, nearby.

Catch a tour boat at the docks or take your own to Seahorse Key and join the fun! If you can`t make it this week, the next open house event will take place August 3rd. The anniversary of the light station will be hosted by the Refuge and partners, Levy County and Cedar Key Historical Societies. If you want to learn history of the area, Toni Collins will be on hand to answer your questions.

Mark your calendars and join the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge at Seahorse Key for spectacular summer events for the whole family.
