Cedar Key Volunteer Fire Department Honors Military Service Men and Women

By Rita Baker

Monday afternoon volunteers of the Cedar Key Fire Department braved pouring rain and heavy winds in an effort to set up and display Military and American flags honoring our community`s service men and women whose names are attached to flag poles at Number 4 Bridge. Fire Chief Robert Robinson stated, "The sole purpose of this display is to Honor all of the young men and women who serve in the military. We want them to know we are proud of them and recognize their service." Fire Department Volunteer James McCain stated, "If you know anyone who is serving that is not recognized, please get in touch with a Fire Department member. We don`t want to leave anyone out because that is not our intention."
Volunteers spend hours of personal time preparing this display. This year additional time was spent digging new holes to replace anchors removed during water line construction along Highway 24.

According to Chief Robinson between one-hundred-twenty and one-hundred-fifty flags will be affixed to poles and buildings in various locations beginning at Number Four Bridge and continuing into downtown Cedar Key and the City Park.

Chief Robinson also stated that approximately eighty-five hundred dollars has been donated and raised for the Fourth of July fireworks celebration. The event will begin July 4th at approximately 9 P. M. from Cemetery Point.
