JennieFest In Full Swing | JennieFest In Full SwingBy Bobby McCabe JennieFest, the fundraising effort to assist Cedar Key resident Jennie Pinto with medical bills and living expenses, has begun. Jennie, who recently underwent successful surgery to remove a brain tumor, has been a tireless supporter of local charitable efforts and now needs help herself. 2000 "Jennie Hearts" were distributed to businesses throughout Cedar Key. The hearts were designed by Tina Berger and donated by Jim and Laura Thornbrugh of Island Printing and Advertising in Key West after they heard of Jennie`s situation. By the end of the first day the hearts were out more than $200.00 had been collected. The pink paper hearts with Jennie`s name written across the top can be purchased for a $1.00 donation. The donor is encouraged to write a note to Jennie. The hearts will be given to Jennie along with the money collected. The Island Hotel and the Harbour Master Suites have taken the concept one step farther and the $1.00 donation is also a chance to enter a drawing for a stay at the respective lodgings. JennieFest will culminate on July 16th. On that Saturday, there will be a silent auction where artwork and photographs created by local artists can be purchased. Bill Roberts, Pat Bonish, and Elsa Sibley have donated works for the event. Bob Treat and Gina Montgomery have collaborated to create a spectacular blown glass heart encased in cedar. Cedar Key kids are setting up a stand to sell water and lemonade to boaters and pedestrians near the marina. The Cedar Key Pirates are having a rummage sale. The proceeds from the Pirates, at Jennie`s request, will go to the gas card fund for medical travel created by Jennie and administered by the Methodist Church. Businesses all over Cedar Key are having Jennie specials that day. Deb and Gus Soldatos will be offering a chance to "Dunk a Greek" and others in a dunk tank. One of the tastiest specials will be at Annie`s Cafe where Glenda is giving away a slice of cake with the purchase of a Jennie Heart. There is a complete list of participants and activities on the Pirate`s web site at: www.cedarkeypiratesinparadise.com JennieFest is not a typical fundraising event. It is a living tribute to Jennie and her service to our community. Rarely has there been a meal cooked or a project presented by the Lion`s Club that Jennie hasn`t participated in. Most recently, she has collected eye glasses to be recycled for the sight impaired, and gas cards so people can afford to drive to medical treatment. It is also symbolic of the willingness of people in Cedar Key help another. The motto for this event is "Cedar Key - A small town with a BIG heart". Jennie and others routinely and unselfishly give of themselves for the benefit of others. |
