FREE Lower Suwannee Refuge Hunt Permits Available

Pam Darty

Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge announces 2011-2012 Hunt Brochure/Permits are available now at several locations convenient to most Levy, Dixie, and Gilchrist County residents. Regulations, a map and directions for applying for limited hunts are included with the free permit.

You can find the free permits at: the Deer Stand, WalMart Sporting Goods Department, and your Levy, Dixie, and Gilchrist County tax offices. By calling and leaving a message at 352/493-0238, extension 223, the Refuge will mail the free brochure/permit

In addition to archery, black powder, and general gun, there will be a two-day Limited Quota Hunt for antlerless deer and a week-long Limited Quota Hunt for hog, as well as a free Youth Hunt. Small game, raccoon and spring gobbler seasons are also covered in the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge Hunt Brochure/Permit.

Application directions for the limited quota hunts are new this year. Hunters must go to myfwc.com for Lower Suwannee NWR limited anterless deer and hog quote hunts. They may apply for group hunts from July 15 through August 31; anyone applying late may not apply for group hunts. If you have no computer access, you may go to your tax office and the clerks will assist you.

The free two-day Limited Youth Hunt will provide 100 youths with the opportunity to continue the hunting tradition with a deer/hog hunt. Each youth must be accompanied by an adult. Just call the Refuge at 352/493-0238, extension 223 and provide name and address for the youth hunter. They will receive their permit around Thanksgiving.

The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, plants and their habitat for the continuing benefit of the American people. That includes youth groups, hunters, anglers, photographers, birders -and you!
