Empty Bowls

Amy Gernhardt

A creative solution to a perennial problem will be enacted by Cedar Key residents this year. Making soup and ladling it into a handmade bowl, will feed the hungry two ways. The first, requires a local person who is willing to pay for a nutritrous meal. The purchase of the donated soup and salad includes a bonus for the purchaser. They get to keep the bowl. The money paid will be donated to the local food bank. A local person will benefit as a recipient of the food from the food bank. This exchange will take place in a time of most need, the holiday season in Cedar Key.

This summer, art students and teachers at the Cedar Key Arts Center fabricated bowls from clay. These were fired and glazed, at Cedar Key Pottery. More bowls are needed for a successful event, and can be made by anyone who contacts us at 543-9165 or ckpottery@yahoo.com. Please write Empty Bowls in the subject line. The bowls will need to be completed by October 31st. The time needed to make a bowl is less than one hour. Then we will glaze and fired here. That process usually takes three weeks.

This is one of the EMPTY BOWLS and was made by River Wirth during the summer arts program.

Soup and salad makers are also needed to donate food for the event. The food will be placed into the purchased bowl, and we will join in a community supper. The challenge to the community, is where do you see yourself contributing? Are your artisitic skills better expressed in the bowl, the soup, the salad, or helping to coordinate this event? We all can help anyway we choose. Please call 543-9165 and leave your name and what you wish to contribute. This event will be held in November.

The donation to the food bank is targeted for the time period between Thanksgiving and Christmas, or Hannakuh.
