Florida Master Naturalist Class in Cedar Key

Florida Master Naturalist Class in Cedar Key

ANNOUNCEMENT

Back by popular demand, the Florida Master Naturalist Program (FMNP) will be returning to Cedar Key this winter. John Lohde, former National Park Ranger, who has worked in every ecosystems in Florida and others across the country will be teaching the Coastal Unit. The sponsoring agency, the US Fish & Wildlife Service, Lower Suwannee and Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuges will also be the beneficiary of the class.

Founder and Director of the University of Florida`s Master Naturalist Program, Dr. Marty Main said of Lohde, "I am very enthusiastic about this renewed partnership. John is an excellent instructor and received very positive reviews from former FMNP participants." The fact is, after taking the Uplands Unit himself, Lohde went to register for the next unit when he was told, "Oh, we wanted you to be an instructor!"

During the 40-hour class there will be 3 field trips to locations within the Lower Suwannee NWR as well as guest speakers, experts in their fields. The field trips help students connect the classroom subjects with the real world ecosystems. The class members will be given a week to do the FMNP required project for the Refuge. Each group`s presentation will be given on the day of graduation.

"The Florida Master Naturalist Program has served as a model for other states that, like Florida, recognize the importance of an informed and active citizenry" says Lohde.

The purpose of the FMN Program is to enlighten the citizens of Florida`s communities in order that they become more effective advocates for Florida`s environment and wildlife. Go to the Florida Master Naturalist Program website to register for the Coastal Unit which starts February 28th at 9:00 AM at the senator Kirkpatrick Marine Lab in Cedar Key. For more information, call the Refuge at 352/493-0238, extension 223.
