Cedar Key Girl Scouts Celebrate the Big 1-0-0

Molly Beckham-Cowart

Girl Scouts across the nation have much to celebrate this week. March 11th through the 17th is National Girl Scout Week. This year is not any regular anniversary though, March 12th marks the 100th anniversary of the official birth of Girl Scouting in the United States.

The Girl Scouts of America organization was founded in 1912, in Savannah, Georgia by Juliette Gordan Low, or "Crazy Daisy" as she was affectionately called by friends. It now boasts more than 50 million alumnae including many well known Girl Scouts such as former First Ladies Laura Bush, Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton, as well as others, Lucille Ball, Mary Tyler Moore, Mariah Carey and Venus Williams just to name a few.

Local troops are celebrating this whole week with events like Girl Scout Sunday, "Cookie Walkabout" sales and Community Service Appreciation Day. The mission of the GSA is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Who knew a cookie could do all that?
