Art Rocks at Cedar Key Arts Center

Art Rocks at Cedar Key Arts Center

By Janet Cook

Art rocks at the Cedar Key Arts Center's December juried exhibit, "Rock the Boat".

Narcissus by Valerie Bretl

This is one of the center's most enjoyable exhibits which features community artists of various media whose creative juices flow as they create art that is "out of the box", something funky and definitely unique. The pieces are as varied and as different are the individual artists. There are mosaics, paintings, sculpture & photographs to be seen & experienced.

Carapace by Mike Leiner

The juried exhibit's opening reception was held on Saturday evening, December 02, and the winners were announced. The judge was Hope White, a well known exhibited artist from Gainesville. As the crowded gallery quieted to hear Hope White announce her choices, she gave a brief explanation as to why the pieces were chosen.

Best Friends by Connie Nelson

1st Place: "Narcissus"
Mosaic by Valerie Bretl
The piece is a framed colorful, eye catching vase with flowers.
Upon close inspection, one sees that the circle of ladies around the vase is broken as the blue ladies free themselves from the safe & predicable circle and climb to new roles and experiences among the flowers.
2nd Place: Carapace, "there's a fat little child in all of us"
Raku clay by Mike Leiner
A hanging sculpture of a woman's chest with an arched opening to the womb were the fat little blue child sits.
3rd Place: "Best friends"
Paper mache, paint, polymer clay & figurines by Connie Nelson
"It's a quirky update of Hansel & Gretel as portrayed by a gnome & his best friend, the gothic girl" described the exhibit's judge, Hope White.
Honorable Mention:
"Makshimo Bushido", sculpture by Jim Hoy
" Owl Mocking", photograph by Terry Hitt

The "Peoples' Choice Award" is a new addition to the exhibit.
Visitors are asked to vote upon their favorite piece of the show with the winner to be announced at the January art reception.

The exhibit is open to the public and free of charge. A donation is always welcome in support of the non-profit arts center. The Art Center is located on Second Street across from the library and above the Keyhole.

During the holiday season, do include a visit to the Cedar Key Arts Center and enjoy this delightful community show.
