City of Cedar Key
Library Tour
April 13, 2004

Present: Mayor Ken Daniel, Commissioners Cecil Quates, Paul Oliver, Sue Colson, Heath Davis, City Clerk Frances Hodges, Librarian Janice Coupe, Building Official Mickey Wieland and soon to be Commissioner Vanessa Edmunds.

Librarian Janice Coupe led the group through the building at 6:30 p.m., showing what each section will hold. At the front entrance historical photos and objects will display information about the Schlemmer House. Elizabeth Ehrbar will help to create this area. Filling the rest of the space are
stairs to the second floor, the reference section, computers and the circulation desk. Access to the second floor can be open even when the first floor is locked.

The central area will have the copier, the drinking fountain, a closet and on the left, the entrance from the elevators, rest rooms and handicapped access. This is bounded by the Children¹s section on the left and the stacks
on the right. Janice will develop a sea theme in this area with an aquarium and other materials. Linda Siefert will help develop this. The rear will have two tables and a dozen chairs, plus a few more comfortable ones. The group asked about wall covering (dry wall and some bead board in the front).

Commissioner Quates suggested using green board near the floor to minimize flood damage. Commissioner Davis asked if the space will allow more stacks for the books. She is not sure. Although probably not much bigger than the present library, it is a better use of space. They will be clearing out old and less useful books to keep the books current. The Children`s area will be double the old space. There is a rear exit for emergency use. The cement floor will receive an acid stain. There were positive comments about this
feature in other buildings.

On the second floor one room will be a librarian workroom, a welcome increase in space. The other side will have periodicals and a sitting area. The porch will also be used as a reading are. The central area houses access to the elevator and a storage closet. The rear will serve as a
meeting area, complete with a kitchenette. Commissioner Quates donated a refrigerator on the spot. Throughout there will be suspended ceilings.

The tour ended at 6:55 p.m. to start the Commission meeting at City Hall.
