Time For Emergency Planning is Now

Time For Emergency Planning is Now

Jim Hoy

Cedar Key Fire Chief Robert Robinson addressed the City Commission June 21 regarding formal determination of the chain-of-command during emergency situations. Chief Robinson pointed out that the current plan allows for designation of alternatives to the top of the chain. Also, someone needs to be at the Levy County Emergency headquarters to relay information to appropriate people outside Cedar Key during an emergency. Key people that will be working in Cedar Key are the Fire Chief, Police Chief, Mayor and Water Department officials. An advisory committee may be formed.

During emergencies water supplied may be shut off to protect the water and sewage systems. Water for fighting fires then becomes an issue.

Chief Robinson reiterated that re-entry permits will need to be shown for residents that wish to return to the island following evacuation. He repeated his plea for people to evacuate when it is ordered. Those who choose to "ride out the storm" in their homes make things difficult for emergency crews who may be unaware of trapped storm victims.
