Speed Tables Coming on Whiddon Avenue

Speed Tables Coming on Whiddon Avenue

Jim Hoy

A long-term issue, speed control on Whiddon Avenue near the Cedar Key School, came to a head at the July 26 Commission meeting. As the only agenda item, the focus of discussion was the number and location of speed tables to be constructed when the paving contractor seeks to finish work before the beginning of the school year.

Speed tables, in contrast to speed humps, are pavement elevated six inches for forty feet, and with shallow ramps at each end. Bobby McCabe, who lives on Whiddon Avenue testified that vehicles turn off State Route 24 at astounding rates of speed. Police Chief Virgil Sandlin, a strong advocate of speed tables, reiterated his support for installation of the forty foot long devices. He added that some drivers will be maddened by the tables. He anticipates radar enforcement as well as the structural changes in the pavement.

The City Commission had previously voted to construct speed tables on either side of the school crossing. At the suggestion of Mr. McCabe, a third table beyond the one between the crossing and State Route 24 was considered. Commissioner Sue Colson`s motion, seconded by Scott Dennison, to install the third table passed on a three to one vote. (Commissioner Gene Hodges was absent.)

Mayor/Commissioner Heath Davis, with the help of City Staff will determine the exact location of the third table after viewing the driveways of residences on Whiddon Avenue.
