Cedar Key Police Chief Virgil Sandlin and Fire Chief Robert Robinson reported to the City Commission at the January 17 meeting. Chief Sandlin presented a summary of activities during 2011. Addressing physical and verbal disturbances was required 66 times, with about equal numbers of each category. Assistance rendered (124 times) was was the most common activity. Driving under the influence arrests (24) outnumbered drug arrests (10). Chief Sandlin told Cedar Key News that about 75 percent of the arrests for DUI resulted in convictions. There were twenty-four vandalism cases, and double that number of thefts. Fifteen complaints about animals occurred, some of which were resolved. Noise complaints (10) were generally resolved. Fire Chief Robinson reported on installation of fire hydrants. He also expressed concern about how money was allocated based simply on number of calls made. He noted that a single call in the Rosewood area resulted in much time consumed on the road. Regarding the Fire Department`s Drug-free Policy, the 1999 policy is under review. Chief Robinson pointed out to the Commissioners that they are subject to drug testing, particularly in the event of an accident. Some Commissioners made jocular comments following the Chief`s remarks. |
