Last Monday night, Chief Robert Robinson, of the Cedar Key Volunteer Fire Departmen (with the unanimous approval of the City Commission) presented Former Chief and the longest serving volunteer firefighter, James McCain, the keys to the 1969 Ford firetruck as a token of appreciation for the selfless dedication and leadership he has provided.
Chief Robinson thanked all the volunteers for their service and recognized their loved ones for their support. He noted that the volunteer work requires a dedicated team effort that is critical to the safety and success of the calls. He also recognized how often their family activities are disrupted at all times of the day or night when they respond to calls.
A blessing of the food, men and families was given by Rev. Daniel Carswell, who is also a volunteer fireman. He gave thanks for keeping the men safe on all the calls they have responded to and asked for that blessing to be continued in the future.
Former Chief and volunteer firefighter, James McCain was noticeably moved when he accepted the title to the truck and shared his appreciation for being a part of the department. He has served since 1978 and remembers when the City purchased the truck - brand new. Money for the event was provided by an anonymous donor. What was left over was distributed it the volunteers (about $40 each.) In the photo above, James McCain`s younger brother (and Honorary Chief) Harold McCain is holding in his envelope. According to James, "Harold was very excited about getting that money." The truck is used only for parades and McCain is unsure if he can afford the insurance to maintain it and he will have to build a shed at his house to store the vintage vehicle. When asked about what he most remembers about his service he said, "I`ve got a lot of memeories but I`m no good at telling them." |
