Community Redevelopment Wish Lists

Community Redevelopment Wish Lists

Robin McClary

It was interesting to be at the last meeting of the City Commission sitting as the Community Redevelopment Agency. There was a call to the City Commissioners for a "wish List" of ideas to be considered for funding from the CRA. One of the Commissioners had just taken office and another had one meeting under his belt.

Perhaps, we should consider the ideas presented the Cedar Key Redevelopment Plan presented in Resolution 200, adopted on May 18, 2000. It looks like it was pretty well thought out. The list includes the following items:

[For the complete text of this document and the City Comprehensive Plan, please go to the Documents section of cedarkeynews.com...Ed.]

OPEN SPACE AND STREET LAYOUT

This section calls for increasing the amount of open space in the City and a provision to create "pocket parks."

TYPE, SIZE, HEIGHT, NUMBER, AND PROPOSED USE OF BUILDINGS

This section points out that the city of Cedar key Land Development Code and zoning map sets out the parameters for density and usage of buildings in Cedar Key.

[Perhaps, the enactment of the Hearing Officer Ordinance would help with enforcement...Ed.]

PUBLIC FACILITIES AND IMPROVEMENTS

(1) The city lacks sufficient fire protection facilities, hydrants and water supply. (2) The storm water management facilities are inadequate. (3) Parking facilities are inadequate. (4) There is a "notable lack of sufficient" sidewalk space.

[There is an awful lot of "insufficiency" in the Public Facility List...Ed.]

TRAFFIC CIRCULATION AND RIGHT-OF-WAY IMPROVEMENTS

There should be an overall improvement of traffic conditions throughout the area.

ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY

Redevelopment efforts should not threaten the natural environment of Cedar Key.

COMMUNITY FACILITIES AND SERVICES

This section calls for (1) the creation of pocket parks, (2) paving or repaving of streets, (3) addition of or improvements to docking facilities, (4) addition or improvement of sidewalks, (4) alleviation of parking problems and (5) improvement of storm water management facilities.

[The whole document looks like a decent wish list to me...Ed.]
