Clamerica, Cedar Key's celebration of our abundant clam production, is again to be held on Independence Day. As the preeminent producer of farm-raised clams in the United States, we celebrate by serving steamed clams, clam fritters and clam chowder. More unusual, but no less tasty, dishes by local chefs and homemakers compete for recognition of the best clam specialty dish. Competition onlookers then have a chance to sample the delicacies. Furthermore, events for children and adults occur throughout the day. A fireworks finale, thanks to the City of Cedar Key and the Cedar Key Volunteer Fire Department, wraps up the Fourth of July celebration. The Clamerica event celebrates our clams, and also the estimated six hundred jobs for clammers and the regional economic impact of clam farming. Beyond the obvious influx of more than $10,000,000 for our more than 100,000,000 clams harvested each year, the clamming operations contribute significantly to the fishing village atmosphere that draws tourists and vacationers to Cedar Key. Clamerica is put on each year by the Cedar Key Aquaculture Association (CKAA), a group of 150 professional clammers. The educational events are cosponsored with the University of Florida/IFAS Shellfish Extension Program. CKAA has put out a call for help.
