About 11:30 last Friday night a Mercedes 450 convertible traveling east on "C" Street went airborne after crossing Third Street. The driver appears to have mistaken the stop sign at the end of "C" Street for Highway 24, as there were no skid marks to indicate an effort to stop. The car landed in the mud about 20 feet from shore. The driver and her passenger waded ashore and called a tow truck.


End of the "road" for a Mercedes

A few weeks ago a car spun out-of-control on the Whiddon Avenue curve just south of the Cedar Key School. The car plowed into the bushes along the Back Bayou. The driver was embarrassed but unhurt.

A few months ago a motorcycle caromed at high speed off a moving truck as the vehicles approached the bridge at Willis Marina. The driver and passenger were injured, one seriously. A guard-rail may have kept the motorcycle and riders from landing in the canal.

Can the City of Cedar Key put up enough guard-rails to keep our waters free of sunken cars and motorcycles? Perhaps a bit of restraint by drivers is a better alternative.
