Cedar Key Churches Seek Way to Provide Food for the Poor

Cedar Key Churches Seek Way to Provide Food for the Poor

James Campbell, M.Div

Representatives of the four churches of Cedar Key began a series of meetings April 25 aimed at beginning a new program to provide food to poor families in Cedar Key, Sumner and Rosewood. All the representatives agreed, on the basis of information they have, that the need is great and urgent.

Peggy and Bill Delaino, initiators of the project, presented a survey of the sources of free and low cost food that they had assembled. There is need and there are adequate sources they said. Decisions need to be made concerning if and how recipients would be qualified, how the program would be administered and how volunteers would be recruited to handle the food and the logistics of distribution. The United Methodist Church has offered to provide space for the program in the building closest to the corner of SR 24 and Third Avenue.

The hope of the committee is that the program would be community-wide. Representatives from The Eagles, The Lions Club and The Woman`s Club have been invited to attend the next meeting.
