142 Years Ago 09 June 1860 - The 1860 Federal Census of the residents of Levy County listed the following inhabitants of Deer Island: William Munden, aged 29, a fisherman; Nancy Munden, aged 29; Abraham Munden, aged 9; James Munden, aged 5; and William, Jr. Munden, aged 8 months. All members of the family were born in Georgia. Living in the same household was Abner Doliff, aged 41, born in Virginia; and Henry Kelly, a 42 year old boatman born in Nassau. Another family that lived on the island was C.T. Faulkner, aged 26, a mechanic and Jane L. Faulkner, aged 25. Both were born in Georgia. John L. Faulkner, aged 2, was born in Florida. Living in their household was David Edwards, aged 29, a fisherman born in Florida. 89 years ago 06 November 1913 - Mrs. Florence E. George of Morriston applied for an automobile license for her 20 hp Ford motor car. Mr. George paid $5.00 and received Levy County license tag number 23. 66 years ago 03 March 1936 - Judge of the County Court of Levy County, J.C. Sale wrote to Florida Governor David Sholtz asking that a detective be sent to Levy County from Tallahassee to look into a vexing situation which was affecting the Paterson-McInnis Lumber Company of Gulf Hammock and the Standard Manufacturing Company of Cedar Key. It seems that a convicted felon living in the hammock shot at several of the employees of the two companies and set considerable fires which burned the lands of Paterson-McInnis. Each time the felon was brought in by the Sheriff, bond was posted by substantial men of the county and the felon was released from custody.
