Press Tours and TV Shoot arrive in Levy County

Carol McQueen

The months of February and March provided a dynamic opportunity for Levy County Visitors Bureau to host two international groups of travel writers, a television segment shoot and a writer and photographer from Southern Living magazine.

Planning for these events starts months out with emails and phone calls to numerous vendors with arranging accommodations, planning itineraries and looking for interesting activities for the writers to participate in.

The Levy County Visitors Bureau`s tour started with a German photographer followed by the Editor of GEO SAISON, the largest travel magazine in Germany. The featured area to visit was Cedar Key and the surrounding island of Seahorse Key & Lighthouse. Editor, Uta van Steen also requested interviewing a local fisherman (Bobby Witt was selected) to feature in her December 2012 issue.

In March, a Visit Florida-England representative contacted the Levy County Visitors Bureau requesting assistance for an English travel writer who would be visiting and writing about the Cedar Key area. This writer is a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers and writes for Time Out and SAGA magazines.

As soon as these two international travel writers were finishing their visit to Levy County arrangements were being finalized with a group of six outdoor and fishing writers to visit Chiefland, Inglis and Yankeetown for our Saltwater Fishing Press Tour. This group of writers were from across the US; some coming from New Jersery-Outdoor columnist; The Miami Herald-Fishing section; Atlanta area sent three writers who write for various publications such as Southeastern Outdoor Press Association; Editor of the Alabama and Florida Fish and Game, Tennessee Sportsman and West Virginia Game & Fish magazines also the Outdoor columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper; columnist for Outdoor and Travel-Field and Stream Magazine; and VISIT FLORIDA`s Boating and Fishing Insider just to name a few. The writers were amazed by the beauty of the area and especially the saltwater marsh areas near the Withlacoochee River.

Southern Living magazine contact the Levy County Visitors Bureau the first of February requesting interesting photos for their review for future articles in their magazine. They selected to visit Cedar Key and the springs in the upcoming months. Southern Living just finished their Cedar Key photo and editorial shoot the end of March visiting historical buildings, Dock Street and local restaurants.

The week of April 2, brought the return of "How to Do Florida" TV segment camera crew back to Levy County to shoot their third television segment in Cedar Key entitled "How to Do Florida on a Motorcycle" with the other two segments entitled `How to Kayak Fish in Florida" and "How to Do a Seafood Extravaganza in Florida" featuring Cedar Key Clams.

The video crew started shooting a sunrise on Fernandina Beach and traveled across the state in one day for a sunset at Cedar Key. This year all segments shot in Cedar Key will air for the second time starting this summer.

A special "Thank You" to all accommodations, restaurants, retail vendors who were so willing to participate with making the travel writers tours and TV shoot such a success for LEVY COUNTY and your individual communities. When positive editorial is published throughout the world about our county assets, readers find what they read to be authentic and believable, enough to plan their vacations and travels to our many destinations. Levy County Visitors Bureau is all about the good news of our communities; its` wonderful and diverse cultural, heritage, nature and rural benefits that abound in Levy County.

Take a look around, it might amaze you what there is to see and do in Levy County, it`s an awesome place to be part of the Big Bend Region of Florida.
