31 March 1860 - The following article appeared in The Telegraph, a Cedar Key newspaper. THE CUBA TELEGRAPH LINE. The Savannah Republican says that the land portion of the Cuba Telegraph line will soon be completed and put to work; but owing to a delay of the manufacturers in constructing the sub-marine cable, some months must elapse before it can be laid. In the mean time, the land section from Savannah to Cedar Keys via Fernandina will be completed, so as to connect with the Steamers from Key West and Havana. 117 years ago
01 June 1885 - The Florida State Census published the following information about manufacturing companies located in Levy County. In Cedar Key, Fennimore Mills produced yellow pine and had 35 employees; the Eberhard Faber pencil factory produced pencils and had 90 employees; the Eagle Pencil factory manufactured pencils and had 105 employees and the highest wages paid the workers was $3.00 per day. The Cedar Key Ice Manufacturing Company produced ice, had nine employees, and the highest wages paid the workers was $4.00 per day. In Bronson, Newsom and Pedrick had a saw mill which employed six people and J.B. Epperson had a grist and cotton mill which employed five people. 72 years ago
03 February 1931 - Mr. H.R. Swartz and others came before the Levy County Board of County Commissioners representing the Bonita Fishing Club and requested that they be permitted to run a light wire line (power line) from near Inglis or the Florida Power Company at Inglis Station to their Club House and near the mouth of the Withlacoochee River. The line would be erected along close to the road right of way running from Inglis to Bonita. The permission was granted by a unanimous vote of the Board.
