140 years ago 07 December 1863 - The commander of the U.S.S. Sagamore received orders to proceed to the mouth of the Suwannee River and to capture two river pilots stationed there. The pilots were suspected of having piloted three Confederate steamers carrying contraband up the river at the end of their voyages to Havana. 103 years ago 01 June 1900 - The twelfth census of the United States was conducted by the Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census. Enumerators counted all the men, women and children in Levy County and came up with a population figure of 8,603 persons.
