Food Pantry Gains Momentum

Food Pantry Gains Momentum

James Campbell, M.Div

Representatives from churches and service organizations of Cedar Key met again Monday night at the United Methodist Church. They reaffirmed the need for a facility to provide food for the needy including outlying areas. They set June 21 at the target date to begin distribution and elected Peggy Delaino as Director with Bill Delaino as Co-director.

Operating under the name, Cedar Key Community Food Pantry, the plan is to distribute free food to needy persons on each Thursday. Food will be obtained from Children's Table in Bronson and Bread of the Mighty Food Bank in Gainesville. The service will be housed in the building at the corner of Second Street and SR 24 owned by The United Methodist Church.

Funding for the operation will come from contributions from the churches and service organizations in the city and from individual citizens who wish to participate. Volunteers will be needed to shop for food, unload trucks, stock shelves, serve drop-in clients and deliver food to persons unable to come in to get food.

The representatives will meet again June 10 to establish a Steering Committee and finalize all plans for the opening of the service. Any persons wishing to participate may come to the meeting.
