29 February 1864 - 31 December 1864. Company E of the U.S. Colored Troops (Union) Infantry logged the following troop activities during the period noted. 29 February 29 - 31 August 1864: stationed at Cedar Keys, Florida. 06 July-made an advance about four miles and had a skirmish with the enemy at Station No. 4, Florida Railroad. Three men wounded. 29 July to 02 August - started on an expedition into Florida. Went to Otter Creek Station, Florida Railroad. Returned August 2. Distance marched was about twenty-five miles. 15 to 25 August - Fifty men started on an expedition up the Suwannee River, Florida and returned August 25. Distance marched while away was twenty-five miles. During their absence had a slight skirmish with the enemy with one hurt. 01 September to 31 December - stationed at Depot Key, Cedar Keys. 108 years ago
24 October 1894 - John E. Markham submitted an application to the U.S. Postal Service to establish a post office at Jerico, Levy County. Markham asked that the post office be named Lake Lynn but the postal department asked that he select a short name of one word. The post office would serve about 50 persons and was located 3 miles east of the Wekiva Run, 8 miles west of Phoenix (Montbrook), 11 miles south of Bronson. The post office served local residents until 03 January 1899 when the post office was discontinued and mail was sent from Phoenix. 79 years ago
04 September 1923 - At a meeting of the School Board in and for Levy county it was shown that the Steen neighborhood had about twenty pupils in that neighborhood of school age and at the request of the neighborhood, it was considered and upon motion, ordered that the school be re-established, and appropriated a salary of $60.00 per month for a teacher for a period of five months. Steen was located on the Atlantic Coast Railroad Line three miles southwest of Tidewater. From the Archives & History Center
