140 years ago

20 December 1863 - The Union steamer Fox attacked a Confederate steamer aground at the mouth of the Suwannee River. The crew abandoned the ship after the Fox fired howitzers and dispatched an armed boarding party. It is thought the Confederate steamer was the Little Lilly. The Federals, unable to operate the engine, set fire to the vessel and it burned to the waterline.

01 May 1911 - The Levy County Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution in regular meeting that the commissioners "shall and will contend for Chambers Island [at the mouth of the Withlacoochee River] to be and remain subject to taxation in Levy County; it being a part of Levy County, and under and by virtue of the law designating and describing the Boundary Line of Levy County and the Attorney General`s Opinion relative thereto."

80 years ago

20 September 1923 - From a column entitled "Winnowings from Williston" published in the Levy County News. Work on the new brick building on Epperson Street, between Marion and Noble Avenues, which will be known as the George Willis Block, started Monday morning. Mr. Willis hopes to have the building ready for occupancy by the fifteenth of October. Epperson Street is currently known as First Street NE and Marion Avenue is currently known as First Avenue NE.
