Fishing 101

Fishing 101

Capt. Dan Shannon

I was apprehensive last Friday the 13th as we motored out from the dock in Cedar Key with a group of fisherfolks.

We were 4 young novices and 3 chaperones, including me. I never suspected the young folks didn`t know how to fish.

Can you believe it? Two girls and Two boys ages 10 to 13. Well....I jumped to it. From baiting to casting to unhooking fish I was a streak of motion over that 24 ft pontoon boat.

At first they all had trouble hooking a fresh, and still wiggling, shrimp on their hooks for bait. The 2 girls took command of baiting their hooks before the boys did. The girls saw what had to be done and took charge.

Casting was a little more difficult. I had to untangle a lot lines from bimini tops to other fishing lines. About halfway through our 4-hour trip, everyone was handling their rods pretty well. Along with the supervision of novice anglers, I had to net and remove fish from hooks and cut bait.

I was busy. We caught a bunch of fish. A variety too. One of the girls caught a 20" speckled trout, and the other one caught a cobia too small to keep at 21". One of the young fellows caught a 19` Spanish mackerel despite never mastering the duty of baiting his own hook. Many silver trout and whiting and small sharks were caught during our trip. A lot of them going into our cooler for eating later.

We were so busy, that by the end of our trip I still had a cup of coffee left in my thermos.

Folks.. we`re having a good long streak of fine fishing now, before the big winds blow, so call me up and arrange a trip and lets go catch `em. It`s only $50 each person and I`ll provide the fishing license and all the bait and rods you`ll need. I`ll even fillet your catch back at the dock and pack it in ice real good for the trip home.

You`ll have the freshest seafood in the neighborhood. To go fishing call 352-486-1656 AND e-mail shanadan50@hotmail.com
