Gone Fishin`: Teach a Boy to Fish.......

Capt. Dan Shannon

Brothers Angle Trophy Trout

Recently, I took Nevin Wertenberger and his sons Nevin and Will out fishing, and we started just northwest of North Key. The water was flat calm and clear to the 6-foot bottom. We floated over some water only 4 feet deep and anchored up.

It`s a treat to toss a line out with a float on it with a shrimp on the hook and see it floating over green grass and sandy areas and then see it get snatched right out of sight beneath the surface and zig and zag down under, and you feel your rod bending and pulling. If it`s a big plump speckled trout, it`s likely to break the surface and swirl around and thrash some and throw water at you. In that clear water you can just make out the speckles from 10 to 12 yards out.

That`s what Nevin and brother Will were up to on my 24-foot pontoon boat. We caught sharks and mackerel and ladyfish, and check out the pictures of 6-year old Will with his 22-inch trout, (his Dad had to hold it up), and 12-year old brother Nevin with his 19-incher.

Just ask Will whose fish was bigger.

In the photograph below, Will is holding one of several ladyfish caught during the exciting trip.

Folks, fishing is real good now out around Cedar Key. The fish are swarming all around the mangrove islands and shallow "flats," including Cobia, mackerel, redfish, trout, sharks and all the other fish that live in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

It`s not too hot out there with my bimini top up and a little breeze blowing. Below is the pontoon boat. I`m eating fresh speckled trout now. Come fishing with me and catch your own. 352-221-5463 and check out the pictures at http://www.inshorefloridafishing.com ....thanks, Capt. Dan
