October Fishing

Capt. Dan Shannon

The 1st 10 days of this month was either too windy or it rained so hard I couldn`t get out to fish here in Cedar Key. Offshore and inshore fishing was shut down until the 13th of the month. We started to get some good enough weather to get out and fish the flat shallow areas for speckled trout and up close to the oyster bars for redfish.

October has traditionally been one of the best fishing months of the year. The water temperature has dropped down to the 66 to 72 degree F range, and the trout, and reds, and mackerel also, swarm into the keyes on the incoming tide to gorge themselves on the smaller fishes and crabs and shellfish that live among the sandy grassy `flats` and around the edges of all the keyes. The habitat here is so unspoiled the fish just love it. It`s easy to catch a redfish and a few plump speckled trout.

I took members of the Villages Fishing Club out on the 24th and we got real busy from the 1st stop. Below are pictures of Clay Hameister with a 19in. trout and president of the fishing club Everret Belter with a 20in. redfish. Fishing around these keys is allways great adventure, plus you get to take home fresh fillets and have them that evening for dinner. Uummm gooood.

Call me and lets go get some. thanks,
