You just Never Know

You just Never Know

Capt. Dan Shannon

That`s right. You never can tell what will turn up on a line you cast out while fishing. We were anchored next to an oyster bar angling for redfish and realizing they weren`t there decided to leave for another spot. As I pulled up on my anchor I saw a fishing rod appear at the anchor chain. I kept retrieving anchor line and the reel to the rod came up and over the rail. There was a very slight cover of tiny barnacles covering both rod and reel. They rubbed right off with just my fingers. Great! I said, "I`ll soak the reel in fresh water for a few hours and clean the rod up and have a new rig to use on charter trips". I had to open up the reel to oil it real well and then it worked smoothly. Nice rig. The price was just right. You never know.

We didn`t catch any redfish that trip but ran into some nice keeper speckled trout out over the shallow grass flats. Here`s a picture of Sandy McClinton with an 18 in. trout she caught and another pic of Lulu from High Springs Florida with a dinner sized mackerel.

With fresh mackerel and trout you really need to have some fresh veggies to go along with them. Look at the tomatoes and squash we`ve grown in our garden. The yellow and crooked neck squash and butternut squash have just shot up real well this year and we have panpatty squash as well. Theres` a pic of one with the yellow squash. Banana peppers and bell peppers everywhere.

Folks, it`s a wonderful thing to catch a few nice fish out floating along the fertile waters of the Cedar Key area and then take home the fillets I`ll prepare for you and eat them that evening. Toss in some fresh veggies and it`s the best. Sound like something you`d like to take the family out on? Call me at 352-221-5463 and we`ll pick a good day for it. thanks, Capt. Dan
