DUI and Child Abuse Arrest

Jim Hoy

Late on September 30th, Cedar Key police responded to a call reporting an erratic driver. Arriving at the scene, the responding officer found a car had left the road and hit a small tree. The driver of the car was Rebecca Morris, age 27, of Chiefland. Two children were in the car, a six month old infant and a two year old. Morris failed roadside sobriety tests and was charged with driving under the influence and two counts of aggravated child abuse.

According to a police report, the children`s father came from Chiefland and took custody of the children. Two hours after her arrest Morris failed breath alcohol tests at more than two times the legal limit. The DUI charge becomes a felony when child abuse is involved.
