Levy Co. Sheriff`s Office

Hello everyone and welcome to this week's Sheriff's Corner. I'd like to use this week's Corner to catch everyone up on some of our activities these past few weeks. First, I'm sure everyone is relieved that the trend in hurricanes has ceased and we can get back to normal.

During the weeks of hurricane activity, your Sheriff's deputies were, at times, in a constant state of activity. Anytime an evacuation is ordered by our emergency management people, it is law enforcements responsibility to try to make sure peoples houses aren't broken into while the owner's are away in a shelter or other location. During the actual storm, our deputies and investigators are given assignments designed to put many more officers out during the times people are away.

Sometimes, crooks slip through and are able to do a break in or two. Sometimes other crimes happen also. An example of this occurred during Frances. It was reported that three or four generators were stolen. Investigation revealed that in reality the three generators were to be purchased for three people by another. When the generators were reported to be "back ordered" the purchasers became concerned that they were being victimized. Ultimately the victims got their money back. There was no theft.

There were approximately 12 burglaries that are being attributed to Hurricanes. Of the 12, all are in the process of being solved with arrests to be made in all 12. Burglaries are, I feel, one of the most traumatizing of crimes. We are very aggressive in our investigation of these crimes and our investigators are very successful in solving these crimes. Have a great week.
