Sheriff`s Corner

Levy Co. Sheriff`s Office

Hi everyone. This week's corner will serve as a friendly reminder that schools are about to start again. As always, some of the younger kids (kindergarteners) go back in small groups this week but everyone will start officially next week.

I remember last years corner and what was covered in that corner. In reviewing the contents I was reminded that no matter how often we hear the warnings, that no matter how may years go by and our children stay safe, the chance of an accident happening is always there, even as adults.

Some of the areas that immediately and yearly concern us has to do with getting our children to and from school. As you know the areas directly around our schools become crowded as children arrive on their buses. This, coupled with all of the private vehicles bringing children can cause problems. So please become familiar with the newest way in and out of the schools access ways.

Next, I'd like to talk briefly about the time when our children are at the bus stop, waiting for the bus. We need to try very hard to leave early enough to arrive at the bus stop on time. When you get there, wait in a safe place well off the roadway, at least 10 feet. After school when you arrive at the bus stop, please be alert to all traffic in the area.

Lastly, while at the bus stop, please remember to tell your kids to never talk to strangers. Also please teach them not to play in the streets, especially around the bus stop areas. Teach them to try to always buddy up with someone. Don't walk or ride their bikes alone.

You know, your Sheriff's Office has received calls and complaints about strangers at bus stops or driving by pick up and drop off areas. If anything like this happens contact us immediately. We care about you and your family.
