Sheriff`s Corner

Levy Co. Sheriff`s Office

Hello, this week's Corner is in response to a suggestion and some information I received from one of our citizens. As I was reviewing the information it occurred to me that we haven't covered this topic and that the issue very definitely affects our citizens. I'm speaking of the topic of dishonest movers.

The scenario goes like this. You are given an estimate to move to your new location. When you get to the new home the movers tell you that you owe more money, as much as twice the agreed estimate or more. If you don't pay, they'll drive off with your belongings.

First of all, I've learned that these scams are usually perpetrated by "fly by nighters" and not by well known moving companies. I've also learned that this is a nationwide problem that hasn't been investigated as much as possible. In reading the AARP article that accompanied the suggestion to do this Corner, it appears that complaints against interstate moving companies doubled from 1996 to 1999, this, from a congressional report issued in 2001. The article went on to state that the Federal Government logged 3,206 consumer complaints against movers.

So what can we do about this situation? Naturally, this topic seems to be heating up. There are advocate groups for people who have been scammed. Legislation has been suggested and is being developed. However, for all of us in Levy County I can only say be careful. Know the movers and their reputation. Make sure they have current insurance. Also get everything in writing and make sure you know if you are moving cubic feet or weight. Know if packing materials are extra.

I'll keep looking at this area and report more to you down the road. If you have any questions please call.
