Letters to the Editor

Dear Cedar Key Citizens and Friends:

letter editor

We have an exciting opportunity at Cedar Key. As you know, land is very dear on Cedar Key. Vacant lots are few and lots on the water have all but disappeared. But a lot is available now that faces the heart of our only viable beach and the lot carries with it exclusive use of that beach area. The lot is located on the corner of 2nd Street and "G" Street and is an area where residents and visitors alike line up to watch Cedar Keys' incredible sunsets. Once construction begins on the lot, the land and beach access will be lost to Cedar Key residents and visitors.

A non-profit corporation (Cedar Key Land Preservation Corporation) has been formed for the purpose of organizing an effort to purchase the property and dedicate it to the city as a public park, assuring the beach and park facilities will be available to everyone on Cedar Key. The owner plans to break ground for (6) individual homes in 60 days, but is willing to sell the property for the asking price of $750,000.00. We have fewer than two months to raise that amount--a staggering task, but one we believe is worthwhile and, therefore, possible.

We are working to qualify all contributions for a Federal Income Tax deduction. Additionally, contributors` names will appear on a plaque in the park, and those who contribute $1,000.00 or more will receive special recognition.

Communities like Cedar Key are disappearing in the rush to develop and commercialize Florida. This is a rare opportunity to make a public statement about quality of life that transcends commercial profit; and it is one that will stand for generations of Cedar Key visitors and residents.

Join us today by calling us at: 352-543-9000. Working together, we can protect the unique, old Florida character that makes Cedar Key so special.

Please make your contribution today using your Master Card, Visa, Discover Card or check to: Drummond Community Bank c/o Cedar Key Land Preservation Corporation, PO Box 701, Cedar Key, FL 32625

Very sincerely yours,
Bill and Alice Phillips
